One of the projects of Chatbot Reporter will be to put together a dictionary of relevant AI terms. These terms are researched mainly through interaction with ChatGPT and Bard. These terms will be added to this page as they are updated. Here are some key AI terms you should know:

Artificial intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science focused on the development of systems that can reason, learn, and act autonomously, seeking to perform tasks that require human intelligence. Using algorithms, models and other programs, AI works to enable computers to process data, language, and other information to reason and make decisions. From playing games to delivering medical diagnosis, AI has demonstrated exceptional abilities at problem solving, and shows enormous potential to replicate or augment human intelligence.

Large language model

Large language models, or LLMs, are AI models that generate text responses that mirror human capacity. LLMs are trained on an extensive amount of text, which they use to help predict the next word or sequence of words that might come next, given the context the user provided.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT  and Google’s Bard are both examples of LLMs. These models are defined as “large” because of the vast amount of text data on which they are trained. This can include books, articles, websites, chat conversation, social media sites, computer code and other sources. The LLMs scour these sources to learn patterns and relationships  between trillions of words, enabling them to generate content covering a variety of topics and styles.

Machine learning

A field of AI, machine learning focuses on creating algorithms and other programs that help computers learn without being instructed on every task. In machine learning, computers study data or examples to improve its performance on a specific task. It’s used in a wide range of AI functions where data-driven decision making is needed, including image and speech recognition, natural language processing, recommendation systems, fraud detection, autonomous vehicles, and healthcare diagnostics.

Natural language processing

A primary area of AI research and development, natural language processing (NLP) focuses on the interaction between computers and human language. NLP involves using computer programs, algorithms and other techniques to enable computers to understand, interpret and generate text that is useful and meaningful.

Transformer

A transformer is a type of neural network architecture that works by allowing it to assign different weights to words related to their context, regardless of their distance from each other in the text. Proposed in 2017, transformers have become a cornerstone in the development of advanced AI models and have been especially influential in the progress of natural language processing. Transformers have demonstrated exceptional performance in tasks like machine translation, text summarization, sentiment analysis, and question answering.

When Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella delivered the company’s quarterly earnings report, he laid out the scope of artificial intelligence powered chat, which is quickly becoming the hottest product for this American technological stalwart. And where does Microsoft stand to gain most in AI? Search.

“We look forward to continuing this journey in what is a generational shift in the largest software category – search,” he said during the company’s earnings call, where AI was all the talk.

His comments about the “generational shift” that AI is bringing rang crystal clear in Chatbot Reporter’s mind. As someone who has been following technology for more than a generation, I knew that Nadella’s comments struck at the heart of my interests.

AI was going to be something truly unique, and Chatbot Reporter wanted to know more. So that’s what this blog will be about. Coming from the keyboard of an experienced journalist, Chatbot Reporter will be asking all kinds of questions about artificial intelligence, ranging from how it is being used and developed, to its business models and regulations, to how you can use this innovative new tool to improve your own life.

A Sea Change in Search

While the “generational shift” was the phrase that grabbed headlines, what peaked Chatbot Reporter’s antennae was the word “search.” I first started reporting at the dawn of the Internet age and one task that has encompassed a great majority of my work was research. In particular, typing an endless number of search terms into Google, trying to retrieve in some cases documents, in other cases, understanding.

It’s what the author’s early uses of ChatGPT and other large language AI models was starting to show. ChatGPT isn’t searching for documents. It’s like having a conversation with someone who has read the documents.

Learning Prompts

One of the early focuses of Chatbot Reporter will be on Prompts, which are the phrases that users feed into AI chatbots to help produce better results. They can range from improving productivity to heightening creativity to focusing analysis, but the more precise the wording, the better the Prompt will deliver.

Covering News and Business

The companies, developments, and market trends that guide artificial intelligence will be another key focus of Chatbot Reporter, who will look at everything from earnings reports to Twitter threads for insight into where things are going.

Written by a Real Person

It’s important to state that Chatbot Reporter is not, in fact, a chatbot but, actually a real human reporter who is writing about these developments. No content is AI generated, unless in cases where it is specifically noted.
